The Application Scientist role supports the Physics Department by delivering advanced laboratory instruction and developing contemporary experimental content for courses such as PHY 300/500. This position involves designing, modernizing, and maintaining experimental setups and laboratory infrastructure. The role fosters innovation in experimental physics education through close collaboration with faculty, technical staff, and students, ensuring that laboratory experiences remain current, effective, and engaging.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Instruction: Deliver and manage advanced laboratory courses, including PHY 300/500, ensuring clear instruction and active student engagement. Provide hands-on technical guidance to enhance students’ experimental and analytical skills during lab sessions.

Experiment Design, Development & Modernisation: Design, develop, test, and upgrade physics experiments to align with curriculum goals and modern practices. Integrate advanced instrumentation, optical systems, sensors, automation tools, electronics, and data acquisition technologies into experiments. Revive and modernize legacy or discontinued experiments using contemporary techniques, ensuring they are pedagogically sound and technically reliable.

Laboratory Operations & Management: Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and experimental systems. Support specialized platforms such as optical and quantum systems when applicable. Assist with resource management including procurement, inventory control, maintenance scheduling, and compliance with safety standards.

Documentation & Academic Support: Prepare and update laboratory manuals, instructional materials, technical documentation, and troubleshooting guides. Maintain detailed records of experimental setups and laboratory activities. Support laboratory-based research projects, workshops, and grant-funded educational initiatives.

Student Support & Collaboration: Mentor and provide technical assistance to students involved in laboratory projects, research, and independent studies. Collaborate with faculty, instructors, and technical staff to support teaching and departmental goals.

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, Quantum Systems, or a related field from an HEC-recognized institution is required. Candidates should have 1 to 2 years of relevant experience in laboratory instruction, experimental physics, instrumentation, or laboratory development.

Preferred Qualifications and Benefits

Strong knowledge of experimental physics, instrumentation, and laboratory systems is essential. Proficiency in experiment design, testing, and troubleshooting is expected, along with familiarity with automation tools, sensors, data acquisition systems, and laboratory electronics. Understanding of optical systems, quantum experimental platforms, and FPGA programming is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical, documentation, and problem-solving skills, coupled with effective communication and teamwork abilities.
