Back-End Engineer (Fintech)

Nostro is a fintech company dedicated to simplifying how millions of Pakistanis working with international clients receive, hold, and spend their earnings in USD. We provide USD accounts, debit cards, payment links, and instant peer-to-peer transfers, enabling users to manage their money seamlessly across borders. We are looking for an experienced backend engineer with hands-on fintech experience to build and maintain the core systems that power our financial services.

Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop backend services and APIs for accounts, ledgers, cards, payment links, and peer-to-peer transfers.
- Ensure correctness, idempotency, and auditability are fundamental aspects of all systems.
- Integrate with banking partners, card processors, and KYC/AML providers, managing webhooks, retries, and partial failure scenarios.
- Design and maintain relational database schemas, write efficient queries, and manage safe migrations.
- Build reconciliation and monitoring tools to detect discrepancies proactively.
- Write clean, well-tested code and participate in thorough code reviews.
- Continuously improve performance, reliability, and security of backend services.
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, including participating in an on-call rotation.
- Maintain technical documentation and contribute to improving CI/CD, deployment, and observability practices.

Required Qualifications
- Proven hands-on experience in fintech, payments, banking, wallets, lending, or similar companies, specifically working on systems that move or account for money.
- At least 3 years of experience building and shipping production backend services.
- Strong proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript.
- Extensive experience with SQL and relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred), including schema design, transactions, indexing, and locking.
- Solid understanding of money movement principles such as idempotent operations, double-entry ledgers, reconciliation, and safe handling of failures and retries.
- Expertise in REST API design covering authentication, authorization, versioning, and webhook handling.
- Knowledge of secure coding practices, including data protection, secrets management, and familiarity with OWASP Top 10 security risks.
- Comfortable working with Git and collaborative workflows involving pull requests, code reviews, and branching strategies.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to work independently in a remote team environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
- Experience with card issuing, payment links, or cross-border/multi-currency payment systems.
- Familiarity with regulatory and compliance frameworks such as PCI DSS, KYC/AML, and SBP regulations.
- Experience working with AWS, Docker, and infrastructure as code tools.
- Knowledge of message queues or event-driven architectures like SQS, Kafka, or RabbitMQ.
- Basic understanding of React/Next.js to collaborate effectively with front-end engineers.
- Previous experience working in an early-stage startup environment.
