Gramian Consultancy, a boutique firm specializing in IT professional services and engineering talent solutions, is looking for an experienced Civil or Structural Engineering Lead. This role involves leading a team of technical trainers who develop realistic, terminal-based engineering tasks used for AI training and evaluation. The ideal candidate will ensure these tasks are technically accurate, reproducible, and reliably graded through automation. This position requires a combination of advanced engineering knowledge, scientific computing skills, technical quality assurance, and leadership abilities to create tasks that mirror authentic engineering workflows and demand rigorous, multi-step problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities
- Review engineering tasks comprehensively, including problem statements, structural and geotechnical models, load cases, simulation data, computational environments, reference solutions, and automated tests.
- Validate tasks across various disciplines such as structural analysis, finite-element analysis (FEA), earthquake and wind engineering, structural dynamics, geotechnical modeling, hydraulics, hydrology, transportation, and infrastructure systems.
- Ensure tasks require meaningful, multi-step engineering reasoning and accurately reflect real-world civil and structural engineering workflows.
- Verify technical correctness in units, equilibrium, boundary conditions, load combinations, design codes, numerical stability, convergence, and safety factors.
- Validate computational models, solvers, dependencies, and simulation outputs for accuracy and reproducibility.
- Review automated graders to confirm they assess relevant engineering outputs like forces, deflections, drifts, settlements, factors of safety, flow rates, and structural performance.
- Identify incorrect assumptions, technical errors, inappropriate tolerances, and potential ways to bypass genuine engineering analysis.
- Provide actionable technical feedback and oversee task revisions through to completion.
- Mentor and support a team of 5–10 trainers by allocating work, monitoring quality and productivity, and resolving technical challenges.
- Establish and maintain quality standards, technical documentation, and best practices throughout the task development process.
Required Qualifications
- PhD, postdoctoral experience, or equivalent advanced technical expertise in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Strong programming skills in Python, C/C++, Julia, Fortran, or MATLAB/Octave.
- Proficiency with Linux and command-line environments.
- Hands-on expertise in at least one major area such as structural analysis, FEA, earthquake engineering, geotechnical modeling, or hydraulic/hydrological modeling.
- Solid understanding of engineering principles, numerical methods, simulation workflows, and computational model validation.
- Working knowledge of relevant engineering design standards, including ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, Eurocodes, or IS codes.
- Experience reviewing complex technical work, engineering simulations, research outputs, or computational models.
- Strong analytical judgment with the ability to detect engineering inaccuracies, edge cases, and flawed assumptions.
- Experience mentoring, reviewing, or leading small technical teams.
- Excellent written communication skills for providing technical feedback and documentation.
This role offers the opportunity to lead a specialized team in developing high-quality engineering tasks that contribute to cutting-edge AI training applications. Candidates passionate about combining engineering expertise with computational rigor and team leadership will find this position rewarding.
