Gramian Consultancy, a boutique firm specializing in IT professional services and engineering talent solutions, is seeking an experienced Civil or Structural Engineering Lead. This role involves overseeing a team of technical trainers who develop realistic, terminal-based engineering tasks used for AI training and evaluation. The successful candidate will ensure that these tasks are technically accurate, reproducible, and reliably graded through automated systems. Combining advanced engineering knowledge with scientific computing and quality assurance, the role requires mentoring a team of 5 to 10 trainers and maintaining high standards that reflect authentic engineering workflows and complex problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities
- Review engineering tasks comprehensively, including problem statements, structural and geotechnical models, load cases, simulation data, computational environments, reference solutions, and automated tests.
- Validate tasks across various domains such as structural analysis, finite-element analysis (FEA), earthquake and wind engineering, structural dynamics, geotechnical modeling, hydraulics, hydrology, transportation, and infrastructure systems.
- Ensure tasks demand meaningful, multi-step engineering reasoning and accurately represent real-world civil and structural engineering processes.
- Verify technical correctness in terms of units, equilibrium, boundary conditions, load combinations, design codes, numerical stability, convergence, and safety factors.
- Validate computational models, solvers, dependencies, and simulation outputs for accuracy and reproducibility.
- Review automated grading systems to confirm they assess critical engineering outputs like forces, deflections, drifts, settlements, safety factors, flow rates, and overall structural performance.
- Identify incorrect assumptions, technical errors, inappropriate tolerances, and potential shortcuts that undermine genuine engineering analysis.
- Provide actionable technical feedback and oversee task revisions through to completion.
- Mentor and support a team of 5–10 trainers by allocating work, monitoring quality and productivity, and resolving technical challenges.
- Establish and maintain quality standards, technical documentation, and best practices throughout task development.
Required Qualifications
- PhD degree or postdoctoral experience in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related discipline is mandatory.
- Strong programming skills in Python, C/C++, Julia, Fortran, or MATLAB/Octave.
- Proficiency with Linux and command-line environments.
- Hands-on expertise in at least one major area such as structural analysis, FEA, earthquake engineering, geotechnical modeling, or hydraulic/hydrological modeling.
- Deep understanding of engineering principles, numerical methods, simulation workflows, and computational model validation.
- Working knowledge of relevant engineering design standards such as ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, Eurocodes, or IS codes.
- Experience reviewing complex technical work, including engineering simulations, research outputs, or computational models.
- Strong analytical judgment with the ability to detect engineering inaccuracies, edge cases, and flawed assumptions.
- Experience mentoring, reviewing, or leading small technical teams.
- Excellent written communication skills for providing technical feedback and documentation.
