The Business Development Representative (BDR) plays a crucial role in driving sales growth by generating qualified opportunities within the logistics and transportation sector. This position involves identifying potential shippers, engaging with key decision-makers, and gaining a deep understanding of their transportation requirements. The BDR is responsible for building a robust sales pipeline through targeted outbound prospecting, thorough qualification of leads, and consistent follow-up. Collaboration with the sales team is essential to ensure that all qualified opportunities are well-documented and smoothly transitioned for successful discovery calls.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and research prospective customers that fit the company’s ideal customer profile (ICP).
- Engage with decision-makers in transportation, logistics, supply chain, procurement, and operations via phone, email, LinkedIn, and other outreach channels.
- Conduct detailed research on prospects to understand their freight profiles, including commodities shipped, shipping lanes, transportation modes, volume, current providers, and potential challenges.
- Qualify prospects by assessing their shipping needs, pain points, buying process, timing, decision-makers involved, and overall suitability.
- Schedule qualified discovery calls for the sales team, providing comprehensive background and qualification notes ahead of each meeting.
- Maintain consistent follow-up with prospects, address common objections professionally, and nurture relationships with companies that may not be ready to engage immediately.
- Keep accurate and current records of prospects, accounts, activities, and pipeline status within the CRM system.
- Confirm and follow up on scheduled meetings to minimize no-shows and reschedule qualified opportunities when necessary.
- Provide a clear and detailed handoff to the sales team, including relevant information about the prospect’s transportation needs and opportunity.
- Build and maintain a pipeline of both immediate and future sales opportunities through persistent prospecting and relationship development.
Required Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Comfortable making outbound calls and initiating conversations with new prospects.
- Self-motivated and competitive mindset, with a strong focus on meeting activity and performance goals.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, capable of managing multiple prospects and follow-ups simultaneously.
- Ability to handle objections professionally and maintain persistence throughout the sales process.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to maintaining accurate CRM records and prospect information.
- Prior experience in sales, business development, customer service, or within the transportation/logistics industry is required.
