Data Engineer

Mobilink Bank is seeking an experienced data engineering professional at the AVP level to lead the development and maintenance of its Medallion Architecture on a MinIO-based Delta Lake platform. This role is critical in ensuring reliable, governed, and high-performance data infrastructure that supports analytics, Business Intelligence, and Machine Learning initiatives. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing scalable batch and streaming data pipelines, integrating data from multiple sources, and ensuring data is trustworthy and readily available for downstream use. Reporting to the Head of DWH Reporting & Analytics, this position is based at the Head Office in Islamabad and carries full accountability for the design, implementation, and quality of the bank’s data lake zones, aligned with governance, security, and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities

- Design, build, and maintain the Raw, Curated, and Semantic Zones of the Data Lake following the Medallion Architecture principles. Manage the Delta Lake on MinIO storage to ensure scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Define standards for data structure, partitioning, retention, and promotion across data zones, integrating data from multiple systems into a unified analytics-ready platform supporting BI, analytics, and ML.
- Develop and manage end-to-end data pipelines using tools such as Kafka, Sqoop, Trino for ingestion, and Apache Spark for batch and streaming transformations. Automate ETL workflows with Python and R to replace manual processes.
- Monitor pipeline health, quickly resolving failures, latency, or data delivery issues to maintain seamless downstream consumption.
- Implement data models optimized for OLAP columnar formats like Parquet to enhance BI query performance. Maintain the Semantic Zone to provide trusted, consistent datasets for business users and analysts.
- Collaborate with Analytics, BI, and Data Science teams to deliver datasets that support dashboards, reporting, and machine learning models. Facilitate Tableau reporting through well-structured data sources.
- Work closely with governance teams to ensure data discoverability, quality, cataloguing (via OpenMetadata), lineage, security, and compliance across all data zones.
- Drive performance tuning of Spark jobs, SQL queries, and Trino federated queries. Optimize ingestion from Oracle 19c, PostgreSQL, and MySQL databases.
- Engage with cross-functional teams including Technology, Risk, and Compliance to deliver data solutions on time and within quality standards.
- Evaluate and adopt emerging big data and cloud storage technologies to improve scalability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Operate effectively in an agile environment, contributing to documentation, knowledge sharing, and engineering best practices.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- 3 to 5 years of professional experience in data engineering, ETL development, or related disciplines.
- Strong proficiency in SQL development and database optimization across Oracle 19c, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.
- Hands-on experience building batch and streaming pipelines using Apache Spark (PySpark) and Trino.
- Practical knowledge of object stores such as MinIO and S3, and Delta Lake architecture.
- Proven experience implementing the Medallion Data Architecture (Raw → Curated → Semantic).
- Skilled in data ingestion tools including Kafka and Sqoop, and ETL automation using Python and R.
- Experience with Tableau for data visualization and reporting.
- Solid understanding of data warehousing, data lakes, cloud storage, and data governance frameworks.
- Familiarity with data quality, lineage, metadata management (OpenMetadata), security, and compliance standards.
