Data Engineer

Soum is seeking a skilled Data Engineer to join our remote team, working Sunday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM Saudi Arabian Time. As a rapidly growing startup revolutionizing e-commerce in the MENA region, we are building a trusted re-commerce marketplace that simplifies buying and selling second-hand products. In this role, you will design, develop, and maintain scalable data infrastructure that supports analytics, machine learning models, and business decision-making. You will collaborate closely with data scientists, analysts, and product teams to ensure data quality, accessibility, and performance across the organization.

Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain reliable and scalable data pipelines to support analytics, ML models, and business reporting.
- Collaborate with data scientists and analysts to ensure data availability, cleanliness, and optimization for downstream use.
- Implement data quality checks, monitoring, and validation processes to maintain data integrity.
- Develop efficient ETL/ELT workflows and integrate multiple data sources such as databases, APIs, and third-party tools into centralized data lakes or warehouses.
- Support cloud-based infrastructure for data storage and retrieval, ensuring scalability and reliability.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize existing pipelines handling large-scale, real-time data flows.
- Apply best practices for query optimization and cost-efficient data storage.
- Partner with product, engineering, and business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into actionable data engineering tasks.
- Document workflows, data schemas, and processes while promoting a culture of reliability, governance, and security.

Required Qualifications
- Proficiency in Python and SQL for data engineering tasks.
- Strong understanding of ETL/ELT processes, data warehousing, and data modeling principles.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, and familiarity with data storage solutions like BigQuery, Redshift, or Snowflake.
- Experience with data orchestration tools, specifically Airflow and Airbyte.
- Knowledge of data governance, security, and best practices for handling sensitive data.
- Familiarity with version control systems such as Git and GitHub.
- Experience working with Dataform is essential.
- Ability to elicit requirements from cross-functional stakeholders and translate them into technical data engineering solutions.

Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
- A minimum of four years of total professional experience, including at least two years focused on data engineering and pipeline development.
- Two or more years of experience developing production-level SQL and Python code.
- Experience working in fast-growing startup environments is highly valued.
- Exposure to real-time data processing frameworks such as Kafka, Spark, or Flink is a plus.
- Familiarity with containerization and deployment tools like Docker and Kubernetes is advantageous.
