We are looking for an experienced PostgreSQL Architect to lead the design, migration, and optimization of enterprise databases transitioning from Oracle and SQL Server to PostgreSQL. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in building scalable, high-transaction, multi-tenant PostgreSQL environments and managing complex migrations with minimal downtime. This role demands a cloud-agnostic approach, with experience in PostgreSQL deployments across various cloud platforms or self-managed setups. The candidate should be capable of designing portable solutions while leveraging cloud-managed services when appropriate.

Key Responsibilities

Design scalable and reliable PostgreSQL architectures tailored for high-volume transactional workloads, ensuring cloud portability. Define and implement strategies for indexing, partitioning, connection pooling, replication, and query optimization. Analyze query execution plans and tune performance aspects such as autovacuum, locking, concurrency, and resource utilization. Conduct capacity planning and establish performance benchmarks for production systems. Develop and enforce database architecture standards, coding guidelines, naming conventions, and technical review processes.

Lead end-to-end database migrations from Oracle and/or SQL Server to PostgreSQL, covering discovery, assessment, schema conversion, data migration, validation, and cutover. Evaluate source databases for compatibility, migration complexity, dependencies, and risks. Convert and refactor database objects including stored procedures, functions, triggers, sequences, views, packages, and custom types. Translate PL/SQL or T-SQL logic into PostgreSQL equivalents using PL/pgSQL and other methods. Define migration strategies such as big-bang, phased, or parallel-run approaches, including rollback plans and downtime considerations. Collaborate with QA and application teams for data reconciliation, functional testing, and performance benchmarking.

Design multi-tenant PostgreSQL solutions using tenant isolation models like database-per-tenant, schema-per-tenant, or shared schema with row-level security. Assess each model for security, performance, scalability, operational complexity, and cost. Establish tenant-aware monitoring, capacity planning, backup, and recovery procedures.

Architect PostgreSQL deployments on any cloud platform, including managed services or self-managed installations on VMs or Kubernetes. Ensure portability across cloud environments while documenting dependencies on provider-specific features. Define strategies for high availability, backup, point-in-time recovery, disaster recovery, and replication based on business needs. Partner with Cloud Operations and Security teams on monitoring, patching, access control, auditing, incident response, and cost optimization. Develop automation and operational runbooks for deployment, migration, validation, backup, and recovery.

Collaborate with developers on data access patterns, ORM configuration, transaction handling, and query design. Document architecture decisions, migration plans, risks, and technical trade-offs. Mentor DBAs and engineers to build PostgreSQL expertise across the team.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of 8 years in database engineering, including at least 4 years of hands-on PostgreSQL experience. Proven ability to design and support PostgreSQL databases for high-volume transactional workloads or large datasets. Hands-on experience migrating databases from Oracle and/or SQL Server to PostgreSQL. Strong proficiency in PostgreSQL SQL and PL/pgSQL, with experience converting PL/SQL or T-SQL. Expertise in multi-tenant database design. Deep understanding of query planning, indexing, partitioning, vacuum/autovacuum, locking, concurrency, and connection management. Experience with replication, high availability, backup, restore, and point-in-time recovery. Familiarity with running PostgreSQL in cloud environments. Strong scripting or automation skills using SQL, Bash, or Python. Experience with Kubernetes and container platforms. Excellent troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and cross-team collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications and Benefits

Experience with migration tools such as AWS Schema Conversion Tool, AWS DMS, ora2pg, pgloader, or Azure Database Migration Service. Familiarity with managed PostgreSQL services like Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, RDS for PostgreSQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, or Google Cloud SQL. Knowledge of PostgreSQL backup and recovery using cloud-native services or PostgreSQL-native utilities. Experience managing PostgreSQL on Linux VMs, containers, or Kubernetes. Understanding of connection poolers like PgBouncer and monitoring tools such as pg_stat_statements, Prometheus, or Grafana. Ability to identify alternatives for Oracle- or SQL Server-specific features during migration. Experience working in regulated environments with database security, auditing, and compliance requirements. Relevant database or cloud certifications are a plus.
