Dev Engineer - Backend - (Mashreq Global Network Pakistan) - Retail Banking Group

The Backend Engineer plays a crucial role in delivering and maintaining IT applications and services that support the organization's strategic goals in information technology. Working within agile squads, this role focuses on developing short-cycle, fully functional IT products. The Backend Engineer is responsible for ensuring the seamless operation of systems behind the scenes by integrating applications with necessary systems and services. They provide clean, user-friendly APIs for frontend components while ensuring application functionality, performance, and scalability. This role requires expertise in modern API development, legacy system integration, and database management.

Key Responsibilities

- Actively participate in all sprint events, including planning, refinement, retrospectives, and demos, leveraging technical expertise to contribute effectively.
- Collaborate with the team to understand and fulfill both functional and non-functional requirements of IT products.
- Develop IT products and perform unit testing aligned with customer expectations and internal IT standards; review colleagues’ work to ensure quality.
- Design, build, test (functional, performance, resilience, and security), and automate IT products.
- Manage the full lifecycle of IT products, including decommissioning when necessary.
- Enhance the Continuous Delivery process to improve deployment efficiency.
- Troubleshoot and resolve incidents and problems related to managed IT products, including stack issues.
- Configure IT environments, deploy products on infrastructure, and implement required changes.
- Establish monitoring systems to track IT product usage and performance.
- Work within multidisciplinary teams, taking ownership of software production and technical configuration.
- Analyze and design applications or technical configurations, coding in languages and frameworks such as Java Spring Boot, NodeJS, and Scala.
- Apply Object-Oriented programming principles, including SOLID, to develop autonomous, service-oriented RESTful APIs.
- Optimize performance for large-scale applications and manage databases using SQL and NoSQL technologies like MySQL, Oracle, MongoDB, and Couchbase.
- Integrate backend services with JavaScript frameworks (React, AngularJS) when applicable.
- Employ Continuous Delivery practices including compiling, building, packaging, and deploying software.
- Utilize Test-Driven Development (TDD) and automate tests (regression, functional, integration), alongside debugging and profiling.
- Maintain software configuration management and version control.
- Engage actively in grooming and planning sessions to clarify acceptance criteria.
- Collaborate closely with designers, subject matter experts, and product owners during user story development.
- Operate effectively in an agile/scrum environment, meeting sprint commitments and contributing to agile processes.
- Maintain traceability of testing activities to ensure quality and compliance.
- Handle challenges and multitask efficiently in a high-pressure, demanding environment.
- Take ownership of key decisions, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and stakeholder expectations.

Required Qualifications

- Proven experience as a backend developer with proficiency in languages and frameworks such as Java Spring Boot, NodeJS, and functional programming in Scala.
- Strong knowledge of Object-Oriented programming and engineering principles, including SOLID.
- Extensive experience designing and implementing autonomous, service-oriented RESTful APIs and tuning performance for large-scale applications.
- Solid understanding of database systems, including both SQL and NoSQL (e.g., MySQL, Oracle, MongoDB, Couchbase).
- Ability to write effective unit, integration, and API tests.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies and experience working on cross-functional agile teams.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of conveying complex technical concepts clearly and aligning teams on decisions.
- Strong problem-solving abilities to process complex information quickly and present solutions simply.
