We are seeking a Senior Engineer to join our team and contribute to the design and delivery of features within a large, long-standing .NET product. In this role, you will collaborate with other senior developers to transform rough briefs into fully functional screens, application code, database changes, and optimized queries, ensuring timely delivery. You will take full ownership of features from conception through production, leveraging AI tools like Cursor and Claude to enhance productivity while maintaining accountability for all code you merge.
Key Responsibilities
- Own features end to-end, including interaction design, screen development, business logic, data modeling, and query optimization to ensure reliability for daily users.
- Write and maintain production-quality C# code, preserving existing behavior, integrating new functionality within the current architecture, and improving code quality.
- Bridge the .NET host and embedded web screens by managing communication between C# and JavaScript, ensuring data consistency and UI alignment.
- Design and implement database components such as tables, indexes, migration scripts, and optimize queries and reports for performance under real-world data volumes.
- Develop and maintain operational reports and exports, including grids, formatted documents, and spreadsheets.
- Support background processing and manage releases across live customer environments.
- Utilize AI coding tools responsibly by crafting effective prompts, thoroughly reviewing code changes, and only shipping code that you fully understand.
- Introduce AI features selectively, ensuring clear data boundaries and compliance by avoiding customer or personal data in prompts, logs, or third-party tools.
- Provide accurate estimates based on code analysis, prioritize work to deliver usable features early, communicate risks proactively, and adjust scope when necessary to meet deadlines.
Required Qualifications
- Extensive experience in C# and .NET development, with strong object-oriented design skills and the ability to write maintainable code for senior peers.
- Proven problem-solving ability to clarify ambiguous briefs, identify constraints in code and data, and deliver functional solutions incrementally.
- Solid frontend skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to design and build embedded web screens that are responsive and consistent with the .NET interface.
- Backend expertise in production C# for business logic, data access, and hosting embedded screens.
- Proficiency with SQL Server, including schema and index design, query tuning, execution plan analysis, and writing safe migration scripts.
- Practical experience with Azure services relevant to .NET applications, ensuring secure handling of secrets and customer data outside of code, logs, and AI prompts.
- Daily use of GitLab for branch management, merge requests, and code reviews.
- Strong communication skills to clearly explain designs, risks, or delivery timelines both in writing and verbally, enabling timely team action.
Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
- Experience maintaining large Windows Forms applications and modernizing legacy .NET apps by integrating web screens alongside existing interfaces.
- Ability to analyze poor execution plans, add appropriate indexes, and rewrite report queries without altering results.
- Familiarity with AI coding tools used daily, with disciplined review practices to ensure generated code aligns with product standards.
- A consistent track record of owning releases through to completion, including managing regressions, data fixes, and final user requirements before go-live.
- Strong security practices, ensuring credentials are excluded from source code and logs, and customer/personal data is handled according to regulations.
- Advantageous but not required: background in education, training, or student-information systems; experience with reporting, document generation, messaging, or file storage in .NET; performance tuning for large reporting databases and background jobs; and implementing automated tests for pure logic with manual UI checks.
How We Work
You will join a team of senior developers with significant autonomy over design and implementation decisions within your domain. New development follows established product patterns, while legacy areas receive careful, incremental improvements. We prioritize early communication of risks over last-minute surprises and prefer scope adjustments to missing deadlines.
What You Get
Ownership of impactful features in a product with real users and lasting value, collaboration with experienced senior colleagues for design and code review, and the integration of modern AI-assisted tools as a standard part of daily development.
