This position does not require managing a team but requires excellent communication skills to document inspection results and report any faults or non-conformances effectively. The inspector must demonstrate strong observational skills and the ability to handle physical demands such as standing for extended periods or lifting moderate weights in factory or installation settings. A commitment to quality management principles, including adherence to ISO 9001 standards, is essential for success in this role. Technical certifications like Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) enhance expertise but are not mandatory. By applying rigorous testing and quality assurance methods, the Optical Cable Inspector helps ensure that all cables meet industry standards and customer expectations for optimal operation and reliability.
Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed visual inspections of fiber optic cables to identify physical defects, such as cracks, scratches, and incorrect core colors or diameters.
  • Perform accurate testing of optical cables using OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) and optical power meters to measure signal loss and cable integrity.
  • Operate measurement tools such as micrometers, calipers, and optical inspection scopes to verify cable dimensions and quality specifications.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical blueprints, and product specifications to ensure compliance with quality and safety standards.
  • Document inspection results thoroughly and maintain accurate records for quality control reporting and audit purposes.
  • Identify non-conformance issues and communicate these effectively to manufacturing or installation teams for corrective actions.
  • Follow quality control procedures aligning with ISO 9001 Quality Management System requirements to support continuous process improvement.
  • Report any safety concerns or operational hazards encountered during inspections and ensure proper handling measures are implemented.
  • Collaborate with other quality assurance personnel to develop inspection protocols and enhance testing methodologies.
  • Maintain inspection tools and equipment to ensure they are calibrated and in good working condition at all times.
  • Assist in training junior inspectors or technicians on proper inspection techniques and usage of optical testing tools when required.
  • Adapt to working conditions that may involve standing for long periods, walking on site, and lifting weights up to 50 lbs as necessary.
  • Stay updated with advancements in optical fiber testing technologies and quality control practices through continual learning and professional development.
