Finance & Accounting Lead - Business Central Setup, AI Agents & Latvian Tax

A Latvia-based startup is seeking a finance professional to take full ownership of its accounting and financial operations in a fully remote, full-time role with flexible working hours. The company combines accurate accounting practices with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and practical AI automation to enhance efficiency. The successful candidate will manage daily bookkeeping, financial reporting, cash planning, and Latvian tax compliance while leading a complete migration from QuickBooks to Business Central without external partners. This role requires hands-on involvement in both accounting tasks and system configuration, supported by AI agents that assist with document processing, transaction matching, reconciliation, and reporting. Compensation is aligned with a startup budget and will be discussed transparently during the hiring process, paid monthly in USD.

Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily bookkeeping, including accounts payable and receivable, invoicing, expense accounting, and bank reconciliations.
- Complete month-end and year-end closing processes, balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, and prepare supporting documentation.
- Set up, configure, and maintain Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, covering chart of accounts, posting groups, dimensions, VAT setup, bank accounts, accounting periods, and financial workflows.
- Lead the full migration from QuickBooks to Business Central, including data extraction, account and tax mapping, cleansing, system configuration, trial imports, reconciliation, and go-live. Review five years of accounting records, identify discrepancies, document corrections, and maintain an audit trail.
- Prepare and manage Latvian tax and statutory reporting, including VAT, corporate income tax, payroll obligations, and VID/EDS processes.
- Manage international transactions involving customers, suppliers, contractors, foreign currencies, and cross-border payments.
- Oversee cash-flow forecasts, budgeting, runway monitoring, and management reporting.
- Prepare payments and administer payroll and contractor payments within established approval controls.
- Configure, instruct, and supervise AI agents supporting accounting workflows, ensuring accuracy through clear instructions, reliable data, and systematic verification.
- Maintain document traceability, resolve exceptions, and safeguard confidential financial information.
- Identify opportunities to reduce costs, enhance financial controls, and apply lawful tax efficiencies.

Required Qualifications
- Proven experience managing the full accounting cycle for companies in one or more European countries.
- Practical knowledge of accounting, taxation, and statutory reporting in European jurisdictions, with the ability to apply and verify Latvian requirements; direct experience with Latvian accounting and VID/EDS is advantageous.
- Hands-on experience independently setting up and configuring Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central for live accounting operations, including executing full accounting-system migrations.
- Ability to translate business needs into accounting configurations and verify the accuracy of postings, reconciliations, and reports.
- Experience using AI agents or AI-supported automation in finance or accounting, including supervising outputs and managing exceptions.
- Strong analytical and spreadsheet skills, capable of investigating incomplete records and reconciling inconsistencies.
- Self-motivated with strong ownership of deadlines and clear communication skills, especially in collaboration with company leadership.
- Professional working proficiency in English and ability to work with Latvian-language financial documents and reporting.
- Relevant accounting or finance qualification or equivalent substantial practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
- Experience building or improving accounting functions for startups or small international businesses.
- Previous involvement in QuickBooks to Business Central migrations, Business Central implementations, and comprehensive reviews of historical accounting records.
- Familiarity with integrating banks, payment platforms, document systems, and Microsoft 365.
- Knowledge of Power Automate, Power BI, APIs, or similar tools applied in finance workflows.
- Experience accounting for digital services, subscriptions, and international contractor relationships.
- Exposure to preparing financial information for funding rounds or due diligence.
