Finance & Accounting Lead

A Latvia-based startup is seeking a finance professional to take full ownership of its accounting and financial operations in a fully remote, full-time role. The company combines accurate accounting with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and practical AI automation to streamline finance functions. The successful candidate will manage daily bookkeeping, financial reporting, cash planning, and Latvian tax compliance while personally executing a complete migration from QuickBooks to Business Central. This role offers flexible working hours and monthly compensation paid in USD, with salary details discussed transparently during the hiring process.

Key Responsibilities
- Perform day-to-day bookkeeping, including accounts payable and receivable, invoicing, expense accounting, and bank reconciliations.
- Complete month-end and year-end closing processes, balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, and maintain supporting documentation.
- Set up, configure, and maintain Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, including chart of accounts, posting groups, VAT setup, bank accounts, accounting periods, and financial workflows.
- Lead the full migration from QuickBooks to Business Central, covering data extraction, account and tax mapping, cleansing, system configuration, trial imports, reconciliation, and go-live. Review and reconcile five years of accounting records, identify gaps or errors, and maintain a traceable audit trail.
- Prepare and manage Latvian tax and statutory reporting, including VAT, corporate income tax, payroll obligations, and VID/EDS processes.
- Handle international transactions involving customers, suppliers, contractors, foreign currencies, and cross-border payments.
- Manage cash-flow forecasts, budgets, runway monitoring, and management reporting.
- Prepare payments and administer payroll and contractor payments within established approval controls.
- Configure, instruct, and supervise AI agents supporting accounting workflows; improve their performance through clear instructions, reliable data, and systematic verification.
- Ensure traceability from original documents to accounting entries, resolve exceptions, and protect confidential financial information.
- Identify opportunities to reduce costs, enhance financial controls, and apply lawful tax efficiencies.

Required Qualifications
- Proven experience managing the full accounting cycle for companies in one or more European countries.
- Practical knowledge of accounting, taxation, and statutory reporting in European jurisdictions, with the ability to apply and verify Latvian requirements; direct experience with Latvian accounting and VID/EDS is a plus.
- Hands-on experience independently setting up and configuring Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central for real accounting operations, including executing a full accounting-system migration.
- Ability to translate business requirements into appropriate accounting configurations and verify the accuracy of postings, reconciliations, and reports.
- Practical experience using AI agents or AI-supported automation in finance or accounting, including supervising outputs and managing exceptions.
- Strong analytical and spreadsheet skills, capable of investigating incomplete records and reconciling inconsistent data.
- Self-motivated with strong ownership of deadlines and clear communication skills, especially in collaboration with company leadership.
- Professional working proficiency in English and ability to work effectively with Latvian-language financial documents and reporting requirements.
- Relevant accounting or finance qualification or equivalent substantial practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
- Experience building or improving the accounting function of startups or small international businesses.
- Previous involvement in QuickBooks to Business Central migrations, Business Central implementations, and comprehensive reviews of historical accounting records.
- Familiarity with configuring integrations involving banks, payment platforms, document management systems, and Microsoft 365.
- Knowledge of Power Automate, Power BI, APIs, or similar tools applied in finance workflows.
- Experience accounting for digital services, subscriptions, and international contractor relationships.
- Exposure to preparing financial information for funding discussions or due diligence.
