Frontend Web Engineer

Autometa is seeking a skilled Frontend Engineer to join their team in Lahore on a full-time basis. This role involves working across a client’s diverse web estate, primarily using Astro, along with some Webflow and other platforms. The engineer will be responsible for maintaining existing sites, extending their functionality, and building new pages and occasionally new sites based on high-level briefs rather than detailed designs. This position requires a unique blend of strong frontend engineering skills and genuine design ability, as the client provides direction but not detailed design files or specifications.

Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and enhance a portfolio of live client websites, predominantly built with Astro.
- Develop new pages and sites from minimal briefs, using creativity and technical expertise to deliver polished results.
- Work within existing codebases and design systems, ensuring all new work integrates seamlessly and looks consistent with what’s already there.
- Deliver rapid turnarounds on client requests, providing visible progress on a weekly basis.

Required Qualifications
- Proven experience maintaining live websites you did not originally build, with the ability to quickly understand and work within unfamiliar codebases.
- Proficiency with Astro or similar frameworks such as Next.js, Nuxt.js, or Eleventy; familiarity with Webflow is a plus.
- Strong frontend engineering skills, including component development, TypeScript, build configuration, deployment processes, responsive layouts, and CSS mastery.
- Demonstrated design capability, with a portfolio showing pages you have both designed and built yourself—not just implemented from Figma files.
- A well-developed design sensibility, able to articulate and defend design choices beyond generic terms like “clean and modern.”
- Ability to exercise restraint in design, knowing what elements to omit for clarity and effectiveness.
- Confidence in working with thin briefs, making informed decisions without needing exhaustive instructions.
- Experience using AI tools as a primary aid in coding, with the ability to critically evaluate and improve AI-generated output.

Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
- Mid to senior level experience.
- Full-time, in-person role based in DHA Phase 1, Lahore.
- Competitive monthly salary ranging from PKR 150,000 to 250,000, commensurate with experience.
- Immediate start date.

Candidates who prefer fully detailed specifications and complete design files before starting, who want to rewrite entire codebases rather than maintain them, or whose experience is exclusively greenfield projects without maintenance work, may find this role less suitable. Similarly, those who can code but have no design experience, or who design but do not code, are unlikely to be a good match.
