Principal Power BI Engineer

Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled Backend Developer specializing in Power BI to design, implement, and maintain robust backend solutions that support dynamic reports and dashboards. This role requires close collaboration with data analysts, business intelligence teams, and various stakeholders to translate complex data requirements into efficient technical solutions. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience working with large-scale datasets, optimizing data models, and ensuring seamless integration with data sources while maintaining high standards of security and compliance.

Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain backend systems that underpin Power BI reports and dashboards, ensuring they are scalable and performant. Collaborate closely with data analysts and BI teams to gather and understand data requirements, converting these into clear technical specifications. Continuously optimize existing Power BI data models and datasets to improve performance and scalability, addressing any bottlenecks proactively. Troubleshoot backend issues related to data connectivity, refresh failures, and performance challenges, providing timely resolutions.

Implement and enforce security protocols to safeguard data privacy and comply with relevant industry standards. Stay current with the latest Power BI updates and industry best practices, applying this knowledge to enhance backend processes. Work in partnership with database administrators and IT teams to ensure smooth integration with underlying data sources and infrastructure. Maintain comprehensive documentation of backend processes, configurations, and troubleshooting procedures to facilitate knowledge sharing and future maintenance.

Provide technical support and training to end-users on backend functionalities of Power BI as required. Actively participate in project and agile team meetings, offering technical insights to accelerate issue resolution. Communicate effectively with business stakeholders by providing clear status updates and highlighting any blockers. Maintain thorough, end-to-end knowledge of the organization’s data landscape to support strategic decision-making.

Required Qualifications
Proven experience managing large-scale datasets, typically exceeding 20GB, with a focus on maintaining performance and scalability. Deep understanding of Power BI architecture, including data modeling, DAX (Data Analysis Expressions), and AML (Azure Machine Learning) integration. Strong proficiency in designing and optimizing SQL queries, stored procedures, and data warehouse structures to support complex reporting needs. Hands-on experience with ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) tools and processes to ensure efficient data integration and transformation.

Familiarity with data governance frameworks, security protocols, and compliance requirements relevant to data handling and reporting. Exceptional problem-solving abilities with keen attention to detail to identify and resolve backend issues swiftly. Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with both technical teams and business stakeholders.
