We've built a Student Information System (SIS) for schools — attendance, gradebook, enrollment, and academic management. The core product is functional and in active use by a pilot school. We're now looking for an experienced UI designer to audit the existing design, identify what's holding it back visually and functionally, and guide focused improvements — not a ground-up redesign.

This is a light-touch, high-leverage engagement: a few hours a day, reviewing screens, flagging friction points, proposing fixes, and working with our developers to implement them incrementally.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct a full design audit of the existing platform (all core modules: dashboard, attendance, gradebook, enrollment, admin views)
  • Identify visual inconsistencies, poor spacing/typography/hierarchy, and unpolished UI patterns
  • Flag usability and flow issues — places where a user has to think too hard or take extra steps
  • Propose specific, prioritized fixes (not vague feedback — actionable direction: "this button hierarchy is wrong," "this table needs pagination," etc.)
  • Provide before/after mockups or annotated screens for key improvements
  • Work directly with our development team to review implemented changes against your recommendations
  • Help establish lightweight design consistency (spacing scale, color use, component patterns) so future screens stay coherent without a full design system build-out.
  • Proven SaaS design experience — worked on 50+ SaaS products (please share a portfolio or list of relevant projects)
  • Direct experience with SIS platforms or similar education/admin-heavy software (school management systems, ERPs, CRMs, or other data-dense internal tools) — this is a strong preference, not optional
  • Strong eye for information-dense UI — SIS platforms have a lot of tables, forms, and role-based views, and we need someone who knows how to make that feel clean, not cluttered
  • Comfortable auditing an existing product rather than designing from a blank canvas
  • Able to communicate feedback clearly and prioritize (we need "fix this first" guidance, not a 40-page report)
  • Self-directed — this is a few focused hours daily, not a full-time seat, so we need someone who can work independently and flag blockers early
