Mechanical Design Engineer

SMEC is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join a key barrage rehabilitation project. This role involves assessing, designing, and rehabilitating mechanical gate systems, hoists, and related equipment. The successful candidate will support the project team in delivering safe, reliable, and practical engineering solutions. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will contribute to the overall success of the project by applying your expertise in mechanical engineering design and rehabilitation within hydraulic infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

- Conduct condition assessments of barrage gates, pocket gates, head regulator gates, hoists, and associated mechanical equipment.
- Review existing drawings, maintenance records, operating history, and inspection results to determine mechanical condition and rehabilitation needs.
- Assess and design radial and vertical-lift gates, hoisting systems, trunnions, seals, embedded parts, and other mechanical components.
- Develop rehabilitation, refurbishment, and replacement options, preparing mechanical designs, drawings, specifications, and Bills of Quantities (BOQs).
- Support the preparation of technical specifications, bidding documents, procurement processes, contractor submissions, fabrication inspections, testing, and commissioning activities.
- Provide technical input to barrage safety, feasibility studies, detailed design, and other project reports, collaborating closely with the wider multidisciplinary team.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; a Master’s degree is considered an advantage.
- Minimum of 15 years of relevant professional experience, including at least 5 years focused on the design, rehabilitation, or maintenance of gates, hoists, and mechanical equipment for dams, barrages, or major hydraulic infrastructure.
- Proven experience with radial and vertical-lift gates, hoisting systems, trunnions, seals, embedded parts, and non-destructive testing (NDT)/condition assessment techniques.
- Strong knowledge of relevant international standards such as BS, ASTM, and EN.
- Excellent communication, documentation, coordination, and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
