Medical Officer

A Medical Officer (MO) is responsible for providing comprehensive medical care to patients admitted to the hospital, ensuring professional and compassionate interactions with patients, staff, and visitors. The MO works within their scope of experience and competence, collaborating closely with consultants and other healthcare team members to deliver both routine and emergency medical services. This role involves continuous patient evaluation, documentation, and participation in ward rounds to maintain high standards of care. The MO also plays a critical role in managing laboring patients, performing deliveries as appropriate, and providing urgent medical attention when required. Adherence to hospital policies, confidentiality, and effective communication with nursing staff and patients’ families are essential components of this position.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide medical cover during assigned duty hours, including routine and emergency care, ensuring 24-hour hospital service in coordination with other Medical Officers.
- Evaluate patients admitted to the ward by taking detailed histories, performing relevant physical examinations, and documenting findings accurately in the Hospital Management Information System (HMIS).
- Conduct morning, evening, and night ward rounds daily, preferably accompanied by nursing staff, to review patient status and ensure appropriate care.
- Record patient progress, events, and any clinical changes in the HMIS following ward rounds, examinations, or procedures.
- Seek advice and guidance from senior team members regarding patient health concerns or complex cases.
- Receive and provide handover reports between shifts, attending ward areas promptly within one hour of duty commencement.
- Deliver pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care for admitted patients under supervision as required.
- Manage laboring patients and perform vaginal deliveries, including vacuum-assisted deliveries, according to residency level and defined supervision protocols.
- Assess and manage patients in the Emergency Room, ensuring complicated antenatal cases are reviewed by the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) and endorsed by the on-call specialist before admission or discharge decisions.
- Perform medical procedures within the scope of experience and competence as advised by consultants.
- Liaise regularly with nursing staff to monitor patient progress and respond to requests for patient examinations or assessments.
- Discuss discharge medications with patients and prepare comprehensive discharge summaries.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient medical information and uphold ethical standards without exception.
- Provide urgent medical attention and treatment to hospital staff or visitors in cases of accidents or sudden illness, coordinating with the medical team.
- Remain on hospital premises during duty hours and ensure continuous coverage by staying until a replacement is found if a colleague is absent.
- Comply with all hospital policies and procedures, particularly those related to Health and Safety at Work.
- Foster effective interpersonal relationships with staff, patients, and their families to support a collaborative care environment.

Required Qualifications

- Medical degree with valid registration to practice.
- Relevant clinical experience in hospital settings, particularly in wards and emergency care.
- Competence in performing patient assessments, medical procedures, and managing labor and deliveries within defined supervision levels.
- Proficient in medical documentation and use of Hospital Management Information Systems.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and ethical medical practice.
