A Medical Officer (MO) is responsible for providing comprehensive medical care to patients admitted to the hospital, ensuring a professional and compassionate approach towards patients, staff, and visitors. The role requires working within one’s level of experience and competence while collaborating closely with consultants, senior medical staff, and nursing teams to deliver continuous and effective patient care. The MO will manage routine and emergency medical cases during assigned shifts, participate in ward rounds, and maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient information in the hospital management information system (HMIS). This position demands strong communication skills, adherence to hospital policies, and a commitment to patient confidentiality and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide medical cover during routine and emergency hours, working alongside other Medical Officers to ensure 24-hour hospital service.
- Evaluate patients admitted to the ward by taking detailed histories and conducting thorough physical examinations; document findings accurately in the HMIS.
- Conduct morning, evening, and night ward rounds daily, preferably accompanied by nursing staff, to monitor patient progress and address any concerns.
- Record patient progress, events, and any medical procedures or communications promptly in the HMIS following ward rounds or examinations.
- Seek advice and guidance from senior medical team members regarding patient care when necessary.
- Receive handover reports from the outgoing RMO/SMO and attend ward areas within an hour of starting each shift to ensure seamless continuity of care.
- Provide pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care for admitted patients.
- Manage laboring patients and perform vaginal deliveries, including vacuum-assisted deliveries, according to residency level and supervision guidelines.
- Assess and manage patients in the Emergency Room, ensuring complicated antenatal cases are reviewed and endorsed by the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) or specialist before admission or discharge decisions.
- Perform medical procedures within the scope of experience and competence as advised by consultants.
- Liaise regularly with nursing staff to monitor patient progress and respond promptly to patient care requests.
- Discuss discharge medications with patients and prepare comprehensive discharge summaries.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient medical information at all times.
- Provide urgent medical attention and treatment to hospital staff or visitors in cases of accidents or sudden illness, coordinating with the medical team.
- Remain on hospital premises during duty hours and ensure continuous coverage by staying until a replacement is found if a colleague is absent.
- Comply with all hospital policies and procedures, particularly those related to Health and Safety at Work.
- Foster effective interpersonal relationships with patients, families, and hospital staff to promote a supportive care environment.
Required Qualifications
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) with valid registration to practice.
- Relevant clinical experience in hospital settings, including ward management and emergency care.
- Competency in performing vaginal deliveries and managing labor within supervised limits.
- Proficiency in patient assessment, documentation, and use of hospital information systems.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong communication skills and professional demeanor.
