  • Benefits specialists are an integral part of a company’s HR department.
  • These individuals are responsible for managing and administering a company’s employee benefit and compensation programs, from retirement plans and health insurance to life insurance and beyond.
  • Part of a benefits specialist job description is having an in-depth knowledge of both benefits and the federal and provincial laws that govern them.
  • They need to know how to sort out every issue relating to benefits, and they need to be able to break down these complex topics in easy-to-digest language to employees.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures the accuracy of all benefits enrollments utilizing the online enrollment system and the internal HRIS.
  • Involved in the onboarding of new clients and coordinating the enrollment into elected benefit offerings.
  • Ensure the online enrollment system is kept up to date for eligibility requirements.
  • ·Performs quality checks of benefits-related data.
  • Assists employees regarding benefits claim issues and plan changes.
  • Distributes all benefits enrollment materials and determines eligibility.
  • ·Enrolls employees with carriers in certain instances and processes life status changes.
  • Responds to benefits inquiries from managers and employees on plan provisions, benefits enrollments, status changes, and other general inquiries.
  • Processes and administers all leave-of-absence requests and disability paperwork: medical, personal, and disability.
  • Assists with the open enrollment process for multiple clients.
  • Provides necessary reports for allocation/billing charges.

Qualifications:

  • Extensive knowledge of employee benefits and applicable laws.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.

Experience:

  • At least five years’ experience in HR and/or benefits administration.
  •  Associate degree in HR or related field, but experience and/or other training/certification may be substituted for the education.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor or master’s degree in Human Resources or related field of study.
  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) certification credential.
  •  Preferred experience working with a USA-based company.
