We are looking for an experienced PostgreSQL Architect to lead the design, migration, and optimization of enterprise databases transitioning from Oracle and SQL Server to PostgreSQL. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in building high-transaction, multi-tenant PostgreSQL environments and managing complex database migrations with minimal downtime. This role requires a cloud-agnostic approach, with the ability to design portable solutions that leverage cloud-managed services when appropriate, regardless of the cloud platform or self-managed environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design scalable, reliable PostgreSQL architectures tailored for high-volume transactional workloads, maintaining a cloud-agnostic perspective.
- Develop strategies for indexing, partitioning, connection pooling, replication, and query optimization to enhance performance.
- Analyze query execution plans and tune database performance, addressing autovacuum, locking, concurrency, and resource utilization.
- Conduct capacity planning and set performance benchmarks for production systems.
- Establish database architecture standards, coding guidelines, naming conventions, and technical review processes.
- Lead end-to-end migrations from Oracle and/or SQL Server to PostgreSQL, including discovery, assessment, schema conversion, data migration, validation, and cutover.
- Evaluate source databases for compatibility gaps, migration complexity, dependencies, and performance risks.
- Convert and refactor database objects such as stored procedures, functions, triggers, sequences, views, packages, and custom types.
- Translate PL/SQL or T-SQL logic into PostgreSQL solutions using PL/pgSQL and other appropriate methods.
- Define migration strategies (big-bang, phased, or parallel-run), including rollback plans and downtime considerations.
- Collaborate with QA and application teams for data reconciliation, functional testing, and performance benchmarking.
- Design multi-tenant PostgreSQL solutions using tenant isolation models like database-per-tenant, schema-per-tenant, or shared schema with row-level security.
- Assess each model for security, performance, scalability, operational complexity, and cost-effectiveness.
- Implement tenant-aware monitoring, capacity planning, backup, and recovery procedures.
- Architect PostgreSQL deployments across various cloud platforms, including managed services and self-managed installations on VMs or Kubernetes.
- Ensure portability across cloud environments, documenting any dependencies on provider-specific features.
- Define strategies for high availability, backup, point-in-time recovery, disaster recovery, and replication based on business needs.
- Partner with Cloud Operations and Security teams on monitoring, patching, access control, auditing, incident response, and cost optimization.
- Develop automation and operational runbooks for deployment, migration, validation, backup, and recovery tasks.
- Collaborate with developers on data access patterns, ORM configuration, transaction handling, and query design.
- Document architecture decisions, migration plans, risks, and technical trade-offs.
- Mentor DBAs and engineers to build PostgreSQL expertise across the organization.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 8 years in database engineering, with at least 4 years of hands-on PostgreSQL experience.
- Proven track record designing and supporting PostgreSQL databases for high-volume transactional workloads or large datasets.
- Hands-on experience migrating databases from Oracle and/or SQL Server to PostgreSQL.
- Strong proficiency in PostgreSQL SQL and PL/pgSQL, with experience interpreting and converting PL/SQL or T-SQL.
- Expertise in multi-tenant database environment design and operation.
- Deep understanding of query planning, indexing, partitioning, vacuum/autovacuum, locking, concurrency, and connection management.
- Experience with replication, high availability, backup, restore, and point-in-time recovery.
- Experience running PostgreSQL in at least one cloud environment (any cloud provider).
- Strong scripting or automation skills using SQL, Bash, or Python.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes and container platforms.
- Excellent troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and cross-team collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
- Experience with migration tools such as AWS Schema Conversion Tool, AWS DMS, ora2pg, pgloader, or Azure Database Migration Service.
- Familiarity with managed PostgreSQL services like Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, RDS for PostgreSQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, or Google Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL.
- Knowledge of PostgreSQL backup and recovery using AWS Backup, cloud-native backup services, or PostgreSQL-native utilities.
- Experience managing PostgreSQL on Linux VMs, containers, or Kubernetes.
- Understanding of connection poolers such as PgBouncer and monitoring tools like pg_stat_statements, Prometheus, or Grafana.
- Ability to identify alternatives for Oracle- or SQL Server-specific features during migration.
- Experience working in regulated environments with database security, auditing, and compliance requirements.
- Relevant database or cloud certifications are advantageous.
