We are seeking a skilled Accountant/Bookkeeper with strong experience in the UK market to support our UK-based clients with comprehensive accounting, VAT, payroll, and tax compliance services. The ideal candidate will hold or be working towards a recognised UK accountancy qualification such as ACCA, CAT, AAT, or CIMA. This role involves managing full-cycle bookkeeping, preparing and submitting VAT and payroll returns, maintaining clear client communication, and producing management accounts, all while ensuring strict compliance with UK legislation and HMRC requirements.
Key Responsibilities
VAT & Tax Compliance
Register, set up, and deregister companies under various VAT schemes including Standard, Cash Accounting, Flat Rate, and Marginal VAT schemes. Prepare, reconcile, and submit quarterly VAT returns to HMRC, covering zero-rated, standard-rated, imports, exports, and acquisitions. Reconcile VAT control accounts, monitor deadlines to avoid penalties, and respond promptly to HMRC queries. Draft corporation tax calculations and returns, with experience in VTT Final Accounts considered a plus.
Bookkeeping & Accounting
Maintain sales and purchase ledgers, set up supplier and customer accounts, and process invoices, credit notes, and payments accurately. Allocate bank and cash receipts/payments to the correct invoices, perform bank and petty cash reconciliations, and conduct expense analysis. Reconcile debtors, creditors, VAT, PAYE, wages, and suspense control accounts. Process month-end adjustments including journals, accruals, and prepayments. Maintain and reconcile fixed asset registers, calculate depreciation, record disposals, and account for gains or losses. Produce trial balances, draft accounts, and monthly management accounts. Run year-end procedures in Sage to close and open new financial years.
Payroll Management
Manage monthly payroll processes including employer registration, employee onboarding, and creation of pay elements. Process employee payments, generate payslips, and manage statutory payments such as SSP, SMP, and SPP. Record absences, update records for joiners and leavers, and make BACS payments. Produce payroll summaries and manage PAYE submissions, RTI reports, FPS, and EPS filings to HMRC. Handle year-end payroll tasks, issue P45s and P60s, and ensure compliance with UK payroll legislation and tax bands. Experience with Moneysoft payroll software is preferred.
Client Liaison & Administration
Communicate effectively with clients to request necessary documentation and follow up as needed. Maintain accurate client data and update CRM systems, preferably Bright Manager, ensuring records are current and comply with company procedures.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must be fully or part-qualified with ACCA, CAT, AAT, CIMA, or hold an equivalent UK accountancy qualification. Proficiency in Sage 50 Accounts, QuickBooks, Excel, Sage 50 Payroll, Xero, and payroll software (preferably Moneysoft) is essential. A strong understanding of UK VAT, PAYE, and payroll legislation is required. Candidates should demonstrate excellent skills in reconciliation, reporting, and financial analysis, along with effective communication abilities to manage client relationships and meet deadlines. Experience with CRM systems, ideally Bright Manager, is also necessary.
Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
Experience with VTT Final Accounts is advantageous. Familiarity with Moneysoft payroll software is preferred. This is a full-time, in-person role offering the opportunity to work closely with a diverse portfolio of UK clients, providing valuable exposure and career development within a dynamic accounting environment.
