Principal Software Engineer

Matillion, the company behind Maia—an AI Data Automation platform—is seeking a Principal Engineer to join its growing engineering team in Hyderabad, India. Maia leverages 15 years of data expertise combined with agentic AI to automate manual data engineering tasks, enabling faster business impact for clients like Cisco, DocuSign, and Slack. This role offers the opportunity to lead a team of 10 to 12 engineers, focusing primarily on Billing and Hub services, while collaborating with a global community of principal engineers.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide senior technical leadership and set the strategic direction for the Billing and Hub engineering teams, guiding day-to-day activities.
- Own the end-to-end design and architecture of the billing service, including integrations with finance and CRM systems, subscription management, entitlements, and consumption tracking.
- Represent the India engineering team in architecture reviews and senior technical forums, influencing cross-team decisions and managing dependencies.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Go-To-Market (GTM), and Finance stakeholders to evolve billing and consumption models in response to pricing changes.
- Engage hands-on with engineers by building, debugging, and refining solutions using AI and agentic development tools, while mentoring team members to adopt similar approaches.

Required Qualifications
- Extensive backend development experience with Java and Spring Boot, ideally within a product-focused company environment.
- Proven expertise in system design and architecture, with a track record of leading technical direction at a Principal Engineer level.
- Experience working with billing, subscription, or entitlement systems, along with a strong understanding of authentication, authorization, and permissions frameworks.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or Microsoft Azure.
- Practical knowledge of applying AI tools in software development or building AI-enabled solutions, coupled with a curiosity about agentic development methodologies.
