Bookkeeper Description

You will play a crucial role in managing the financial records of the company and its clients. You will primarily be responsible for accurately recording financial transactions, a fundamental for the overall financial health and compliance of the business.

Your Roles and Responsibilities

  • Recording Financial Transactions - Bookkeepers meticulously record day-to-day financial transactions of the business in accounting software, ledgers, or journals. Transactions typically include sales, purchases, payments, and receipts by an individual or organization.
  • Managing the General Ledger - They are responsible for updating and maintaining the general ledger, which is a comprehensive record of all financial transactions over the life of an organization.
  • Reconciliation of Accounts - Regularly reconciling bank statements against the internal accounts to ensure accuracy in the records.
  • Handling Payroll - Processing payroll, maintaining employee records, and managing queries related to salaries.
  • Preparing Financial Statements - Preparing basic financial statements, including profit and loss accounts, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Accounts Payable and Receivable - Keeping track of all payments and expenditures, including payroll, purchase orders, invoices, and other financial dealings. They ensure that all money owed to the company (accounts receivable) is billed and received, and that all money owed by the company (accounts payable) is paid on time.
  • Budgeting and Reporting - Assisting with budget preparation and producing financial reports. They often report on variances from the established budget, and the reasons for those variances.
  • Compliance and Regulation - Ensuring adherence to relevant legal requirements, policies, and regulations. This might include assisting with tax preparation, filing, and managing company documentation required for financial audits.
  • Cash Handling and Management - Managing petty cash and the cash flow of the company to ensure that enough cash is available for the daily operation of the business.
  • Providing Administrative and Clerical Support - As part of their role, bookkeepers may also offer broader administrative support such as filing, handling mail, and answering phones.
  • Collaborating with Accountants - Working closely with accountants to ensure that all financial data is accurate and up to date. For smaller businesses, a bookkeeper might perform many of the accounting-related tasks, but in larger organizations, they usually assist professional accountants.

Financial Controller Skills and Experience

  • Absolute attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
  • 2+ years of progressive experience as a bookkeeper
  • Formal Accounting background (degree, qualified with experience in a reputable Accounting firm or graduate programme at a recognisable corporate)
  • Experience of working in cross-functional teams
  • Able to work at pace with a strong sense of ownership and drive
  • Analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, train & develop staff and delegate as appropriate
  • Decision-making skills
  • Intellectual curiosity, innovative, constantly looking for ways to improve the business
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, low key, team player, friendly and outgoing, confident and good stakeholder management skills
  • High integrity and professionalism
