Ruby on Rails Backend Developer (AI-Native) - 100% Remote

Hyly.AI is seeking a skilled Ruby on Rails Backend Developer to join their team and contribute to building and maintaining the backend services and APIs that support their innovative products in the multifamily industry. This role involves developing REST and GraphQL APIs, designing efficient data models in PostgreSQL, managing large-scale background processing, and ensuring the reliability and performance of production systems. The developer will work in an AI-first environment, leveraging AI coding agents daily to enhance productivity without compromising code quality.

Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain REST and GraphQL APIs using Ruby on Rails.
- Model data effectively and write optimized PostgreSQL queries, indexes, and perform safe migrations.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks such as N+1 queries, slow endpoints, and resource-intensive background jobs.
- Build and maintain reliable background processing systems with Sidekiq, ensuring retries, idempotency, and monitoring are in place.
- Utilize AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) daily for coding, testing, refactoring, debugging, and code reviews, while carefully validating their output.
- Develop and enhance reusable AI skills, prompts, and agent workflows to accelerate team productivity, including automated test generation, pull request review checklists, migration safety checks, and log triage.
- Write well-tested code using RSpec and request specs, and actively participate in code reviews.
- Collaborate closely with front-end developers, product managers, and QA teams to define clear API contracts.
- Monitor production system health, investigate incidents promptly, and deploy fixes as needed.
- Document APIs and technical decisions clearly to support a distributed team environment.

Required Qualifications:
- 3 to 5 years of professional backend development experience, with a minimum of 3 years working specifically with Ruby on Rails.
- Strong expertise in building JSON APIs, with REST experience required and GraphQL considered a plus.
- Proficient in PostgreSQL, including query design, indexing, and performance analysis using EXPLAIN/ANALYZE.
- Demonstrated strong testing practices using RSpec or Minitest frameworks.
- Daily hands-on experience with AI coding tools in a professional setting, along with the ability to critically review, test, and correct AI-generated code.
- Comfortable using Git, managing pull-request workflows, and working with continuous integration pipelines.
- Ability to work fully remote and communicate effectively in an asynchronous environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience creating reusable AI skills, prompt templates, or agent workflows tailored for engineering tasks such as test generation, pull request reviews, and code refactoring.
- Familiarity with MCP servers or integrating AI agents with development tools like GitHub, databases, logs, and ticketing systems.
- Practical experience using AI tools for debugging, log analysis, and incident triage.
- Knowledge of Redis caching and experience with Sidekiq or Resque at scale.
- Exposure to observability and monitoring tools such as Datadog, New Relic, or Sentry.
- Understanding of containerization with Docker, automation with GitHub Actions, and cloud platforms including AWS and GCP.
