Smart Working is a remote-first company dedicated to connecting talented professionals with exceptional global teams for meaningful, full-time roles. We prioritize not only the skills you bring but also your personal growth and well-being. Our mission is to remove geographic barriers and foster a supportive community where you can thrive professionally and personally. Recognized as one of the highest-rated workplaces on Glassdoor, we offer a truly remote environment that empowers you to belong and succeed from anywhere.
As a Senior AdTech Engineer, you will be instrumental in advancing a proprietary programmatic advertising platform currently in its third production iteration. This role focuses heavily on backend development (approximately 80%) where you will independently manage a critical area of the platform. Collaboration with a data scientist and leadership of the broader engineering team are key components of the position. You will work closely with the CTO, balancing hands-on coding with architectural and technical leadership responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and scale backend components and infrastructure for a programmatic advertising platform, creating low-latency, high-throughput services that process ad requests within milliseconds.
- Build proprietary AI agents for media buying and distribution, partnering with the data scientist to enhance content tagging and ad request enrichment.
- Integrate with third-party AdTech platforms and APIs such as OpenRTB, DSPs, and SSPs.
- Serve as a senior engineer by overseeing code quality, conducting peer reviews, and mentoring team members.
- Independently own critical platform areas while collaborating closely with the data scientist and guiding the wider engineering team.
- Apply architectural judgment and meticulous attention to detail in a real-time bidding environment where speed and accuracy are paramount.
- Shape the integration of agentic processes within the platform.
- Work flexibly within established engineering disciplines, including GitOps deployments and a strong code-review culture.
- Approach development with a problem-solving mindset, focusing on building proprietary technology rather than merely following specifications.
- Prioritize careful, incremental improvements to a live, performance-critical platform without disrupting existing functionality.
- Lead the end-to-end design and delivery of services or components.
- Guide engineers through mentoring and code reviews, setting technical standards without formal line management responsibilities.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of advanced Node.js backend engineering experience.
- At least 3 years building low-latency, high-throughput systems with millisecond response times, handling high request volumes. Relevant domains include fintech, trading, payments, banking, real-time gaming, or betting platforms.
- Over 1 year of hands-on experience building agentic AI for production, including working with LLM agents and collaborating with data scientists on models. Candidates must have built AI agents, not just used AI tools.
- 5+ years of experience developing APIs and integrating third-party services.
- Minimum 2 years conducting code and peer reviews, mentoring engineers, or equivalent senior individual contributor experience.
- At least 3 years of advanced TypeScript experience; strong modern JavaScript experience may be considered as a substitute.
- 2+ years working with React.
- 2+ years experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP); AWS or Azure experience may be accepted as alternatives.
- 2+ years experience with Kubernetes and Argo CD for GitOps deployments; Kubernetes with Flux or Helm can be considered substitutes.
- Senior Engineer or Architect-level technical leadership experience with the ability to collaborate closely with the CTO.
Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
- 2+ years of programmatic advertising experience, including OpenRTB, real-time bidding, DSPs, or SSPs. Strong candidates with relevant low-latency system experience but less domain knowledge will also be considered.
- Experience leading projects and owning the end-to-end design and delivery of services or components.
- Basic proficiency in Golang; experience with Rust, Java, C++, or other performance-oriented languages is also valued.
- 1+ year experience with Jenkins for CI/CD; alternatives such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or CircleCI are acceptable.
- 1+ year experience with Grafana for monitoring; Prometheus, Datadog, or New Relic experience is also relevant.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a cutting-edge AdTech platform within a supportive, remote-first environment that values innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.
