Senior Backend Engineer (Node.js / NestJS)

We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer with strong expertise in Node.js and NestJS to join our team in Karachi (DHA Phase 6) on a full-time basis. This role involves designing, building, and scaling reliable backend systems hosted on AWS. The ideal candidate will take ownership of the architecture from end to end and contribute to the growth and development of the engineering team. The position follows an evening shift schedule and offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic environment focused on innovation and quality.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and architect scalable, fault-tolerant backend systems using microservices and event-driven architecture principles.
- Develop robust APIs and backend services primarily with Node.js, TypeScript, and NestJS.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, including unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
- Manage cloud infrastructure on AWS, including deployment, monitoring, cost optimization, and scaling.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and automate deployments through Infrastructure as Code practices.
- Optimize application performance, database queries, and overall system scalability.
- Collaborate closely with front-end developers, product managers, and QA teams to deliver features seamlessly.
- Lead technical discussions, conduct architecture and code reviews to ensure high-quality standards.
- Mentor junior developers and contribute to raising the overall engineering standards.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and industry best practices to continuously improve the backend ecosystem.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of backend development experience with Node.js, including strong hands-on experience with NestJS.
- Proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript, with a solid understanding of asynchronous programming (Promises, async/await).
- Deep knowledge of system design concepts such as microservices, RESTful APIs, event-driven architecture, scalability, and high availability.
- Experience working with relational databases like MSSQL, PostgreSQL, or MySQL, including schema design and query optimization.
- Familiarity with authentication and authorization mechanisms such as JWT, OAuth, Passport.js, and RBAC.
- Experience with caching solutions (e.g., Redis) and message queues (SQS, RabbitMQ, Kafka, or similar).
- Understanding of real-time communication technologies like WebSockets or Socket.IO.
- Strong testing skills using Jest or similar frameworks (Mocha/Chai).
- Solid grasp of application security principles including protection against SQL injection, XSS, CSRF, DDoS attacks, and awareness of OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities.
- Hands-on experience with AWS services such as EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, S3, RDS, CloudFront, SQS/SNS, IAM, VPC, Route 53, and CloudWatch.
- Proficiency with Docker and container orchestration platforms like ECS or Kubernetes.
- Experience with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, or CircleCI.
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or AWS CDK.
- Knowledge of process managers (e.g., PM2) and monitoring/logging tools such as CloudWatch, Grafana, Datadog, or ELK stack.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and demonstrate leadership and mentoring capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with GraphQL, gRPC, or CQRS/Event Sourcing architectures.
- Knowledge of profiling and load-testing tools such as k6 or Artillery.
- Exposure to multi-tenant or high-traffic systems.
- AWS certifications like Solutions Architect or DevOps Engineer are a plus.
