Senior Software Developer

The company’s desktop team is seeking a senior developer with deep expertise in Visual Basic 6 (VB6) to maintain and enhance critical Windows desktop applications while supporting the transition to modern web-based solutions.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead technical efforts on VB6 desktop products, including defect resolution, feature enhancements, and product releases.
- Act as the senior technical resource for complex issues and critical customer support cases.
- Maintain product stability, supportability, and documentation to ensure ongoing reliability for customers.
- Identify and improve inefficient or error-prone steps in the build, test, and release processes.
- Optimize use of GitHub and Azure DevOps (ADO) to ensure consistent work tracking, code review, and deployment.
- Utilize Claude Code AI tools to automate analysis, testing, and documentation tasks.
- Develop and share best practices across the team to enhance overall workflow efficiency.
- Analyze legacy VB6 codebases using AI tools to map workflows, extract business rules, and assess risks prior to changes.
- Create and maintain characterization tests to capture current product behavior for comparison with web versions.
- Collaborate with Product teams to determine which business rules should be carried forward into new web applications.
- Apply AI-driven development lifecycle (AI-DLC) practices safely and effectively on legacy code.
- Review AI-generated code changes carefully, especially in areas with limited test coverage.
- Work closely with Infrastructure and IT teams on builds, releases, and environment management.
- Mentor team members and document knowledge to ensure information is shared and retained.

Required Qualifications

- Minimum of 6 years of professional software development experience, including extensive production work with VB6.
- Strong understanding of Windows desktop application architecture, data access, and debugging in VB6.
- Proficient with COM, ActiveX components, Windows registry, and legacy 32-bit application behavior on modern Windows platforms.
- Experience in reading, documenting, and clarifying large legacy codebases.
- Daily hands-on experience with Claude Code or similar AI-assisted coding tools, with demonstrable examples.
- Working knowledge of AI-driven development lifecycle concepts and their application to legacy software.
- Familiarity with GitHub and Azure DevOps (ADO) for source control and project tracking.
- Proven ability to improve team processes related to build, test, and release workflows.
- Strong judgment and communication skills to assess risk, explain trade-offs, and prioritize work effectively.

Preferred Qualifications and Benefits

- Knowledge of .NET/C#, React, or SQL Server to support modernization efforts.
- Background in writing characterization or regression tests for legacy systems.
- Experience developing AI-assisted workflows, including custom skills, agents, or integrations.
- Familiarity with Azure DevOps (ADO) pipelines.
