Staff Software Engineer

Key Responsibilities
As a Staff Software Engineer on the Billing team based in Hyderabad, you will serve as the senior technical leader within a team of five. You will guide day-to-day delivery, unblock technical challenges, and act as the primary technical liaison for the Engineering and Product Managers. This role requires working from the Hyderabad office four days a week, with one day remote. Your responsibilities include leading third-party and marketplace integrations, advancing microservices and observability practices, and working in fast-paced two-week sprints. You will collaborate closely with Finance, Go-To-Market, and Data Science teams, contributing to machine learning capabilities for Maia.

You will act as the technical lead by mentoring two junior engineers, two mid-level engineers, and one QA engineer, conducting design reviews, and setting the technology direction. You will own integrations with third-party billing and marketplace platforms, managing production services from design through deployment and ongoing support. Reviewing code and ensuring adherence to Matillion’s engineering standards across product quality, DevOps, and security will be key. Additionally, you will become the billing domain expert, supporting incident triage and response, participating in on-call rotations, and proactively engaging customer-facing teams to prevent issues. Mentorship and fostering alignment between engineering and product strategies are essential, as is contributing to cross-team initiatives such as ML capability development.

Required Qualifications
- Proficiency in Java with a strong foundation in object-oriented design, distributed systems, and best practices including testability, observability, scalability, and security.
- Working knowledge of React in a full-stack development capacity.
- Experience across the full software development lifecycle using CI/CD tools and agile methodologies such as Kanban or Scrum.
- Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud platform (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
- Proven track record integrating multiple third-party or marketplace platforms; experience with billing or usage-based systems is a plus but not mandatory.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, lead projects, mentor team members, and independently solve complex problems.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to represent the team cross-functionally and maintain composure during high-pressure incidents.
- A proactive, self-sufficient technical leader with integrity and a growth mindset.
