Better Devices is a leading innovator in electronic systems, collaborating with global clients to deliver high-quality, impactful devices and technical solutions. Our expertise covers the entire product lifecycle, from early-stage architecture and prototyping to production and field deployment. As we expand our hardware engineering capabilities, we are seeking a Technical Lead - Embedded Systems to drive the development of a new platform that integrates software intelligence with real-world hardware signals.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and lead the design of systems for signal ingestion, interpretation, observability, and automated response, ensuring robust handling of noisy and ambiguous real-world hardware behavior such as timing, synchronization, and uncertainty.
- Define scalable software abstractions to facilitate seamless interaction between software and physical systems.
- Provide technical leadership and direction to engineering hires and external collaborators, fostering cross-functional collaboration across software, embedded systems, instrumentation, automation, and product engineering teams.
- Develop systems that process, classify, and interpret real-world signals, including building pipelines for trace capture, signal analysis, protocol inference, and structured observations.
- Design automation workflows that support iterative experimentation, debugging, and testing, alongside frameworks for experiment logging, traceability, replay, and reproducibility.
- Explore and integrate AI-assisted systems to accelerate engineering workflows involving physical hardware.
- Help define and scale technical roles within the team, mentor new hires across various disciplines, and establish standards for technical quality, velocity, clarity, and execution.
- Cultivate a culture centered on rigorous experimentation, practical engineering, and rapid iteration.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience leading complex technical projects from architecture through to delivery.
- Strong background in embedded systems, firmware development, microcontrollers (MCUs), system-on-chips (SoCs), or embedded Linux environments.
- Expertise in software architecture, including API design, system boundaries, runtimes, orchestration, and observability.
- Genuine interest in AI-driven automation and intelligent engineering tools.
- Practical understanding of physical systems, including digital and analog signals, timing, noise, sensors, instrumentation, and hardware interfaces.
- Ability to analyze and reason through ambiguous, incomplete, noisy, or unreliable system behaviors.
- Experience coordinating work across multiple technical domains and specialists.
- Excellent technical communication skills, capable of explaining trade-offs, documenting decisions, and aligning engineering teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with hardware interfaces such as UART, I2C, SPI, CAN, JTAG, SWD, GPIO, PWM, ADC/DAC.
- Experience in signal processing techniques including sampling, filtering, synchronization, classification, protocol inference, or spectral analysis.
- Hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, signal generators, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems, test rigs, or lab automation.
- Background in building developer tools, internal platforms, SDKs, or automation frameworks.
- Knowledge of AI agents, large language model (LLM) tooling, tool-calling systems, or autonomous workflows.
- Proficiency in Python, C/C++, digital signal processing (DSP), FPGA, software-defined radio (SDR), robotics, or control systems.
- Experience mentoring engineers or contributing to the growth of technical teams.
