Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan is looking for a seasoned and sound OT Technician for its Aga Khan Medical Centre, Gilgit.

The OT Technician is responsible for maintaining and keeping the operating room ready before the conduct of surgery and assisting in bringing the patient to the operating room. S/he is also responsible for handling the necessary preparations before and after the surgery including washing and disinfecting the area for surgery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Following the instructions provided in the manual and seeking the pertinent company’s advice in case of any ambiguity or problem in operating the equipment and using the instruments;
  • Preparing surgical instrument and equipment for autoclaving/sterilization as per protocol;
  • Completing all the documentation required as per approved unit protocol;
  • Check the consent of the patient, preoperative documentation and medication to proceed for the procedure;
  • Receiving and shifting patients in / out from and to OR and other units respectively;
  • Perform immediate post-op-care to patients and document in MR file;
  • Complete pre and post op checklists;
  • Checking the equipment/instruments before procedures, keeping resuscitative equipment ready for use;
  • Conducting routine calibrations and asking for support from bio medical and electrical department for maintenance;
  • Ensuring that emergency drugs cart, anaesthesia tray and intubation tray is ready and drug expiries have been properly checked;
  • Ensuring sufficient number of medical gas cylinders such oxygen,No2and CO2 are readily available and have been checked properly with pipeline proper functioning and attacked;
  • Ensuring proper storage of iv fluids, blood products and other drugs;
  • Ensuring that the sterilized environment is properly maintained through housekeeping and cleaning of OT;
  • Assisting nursing staff in keeping patient safe during the procedure by assisting RN with the application of restraints and following the recommended protocol;
  • Taking care of any specimens obtained for testing following laboratory procedures/protocol;
  • Providing assistance to the surgical team and coordinates very closely with the doctors, nurses and laboratory staff;
  • Making entries for all instruments in the stock register and their operation and usage, reporting shortage/ repair/replacement required;
  • Making entries for drugs in the stock register and their operation and usage, reporting shortage/replacement in case of expiry required;
  • Ensuring proper handing over of post Op patients to recovery staff and document in nursing notes.

 

Education, Experience & Competencies

  • Diploma or certification of Operation Theater Technician;
  • 1-2 year experience as an OT Technician in secondary/tertiary care hospitals;
  • Commitment to quality as well as accuracy and is keen to learn and develop new skills;
  • Excellent communication, and  interpersonal skills;
  • Awareness to ISO 9001-2008 policies and protocols, OR & Nursing protocols and Infection control protocol;
  • Competent in the care of ventilated patients and patients on life support systems;
  • Proficient in the use of electronic patient monitoring technology  and certified in BLS course;
