Vehicle Technician

The Vehicle Technician plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe, reliable, and operationally available fleet of vehicles by performing timely preventive maintenance, accurate fault diagnosis, effective repairs, vehicle recovery, and onsite technical support. This position supports field locations by minimizing vehicle downtime and ensuring continuity of operations through proper use of spare parts, tools, and maintaining accurate maintenance records. The role is based in Islamabad and is expected to last for three months.

Key Responsibilities
The Vehicle Technician reports to the Chief Transport Officer and operates under the supervision of the Transport Workshop Manager within the Transport Unit of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan. The primary responsibility is to ensure the technical and operational effectiveness of UN-owned standard commercial vehicles and civilian armored vehicles at the Islamabad transport workshop. Duties include maintaining, servicing, and repairing a diverse fleet comprising light passenger vehicles (LPVs), heavy transport vehicles, and mobile handling equipment (MHE) in line with manufacturer standards and United Nations maintenance policies.

The technician ensures strict adherence to safety procedures during repairs and replacement of parts, assists in fault diagnosis and rectification, and supports the identification of required spare parts. Mechanical tasks involve engine tune-ups, servicing hydraulic brake systems, cooling and fuel systems, steering and suspension systems, including wheel alignment. The role also requires diagnosing, repairing, and overhauling major components such as engines, axles, and transmissions using service manuals and electronic diagnostic tools.

Auto body repair responsibilities include damage inspection, assessment, panel beating, welding, bonding, surface preparation, painting, refinishing, and replacement of broken glass and windshields. The technician conducts test drives to verify repair quality and roadworthiness, works independently with minimal supervision, and may lead a team of junior mechanics. Accurate updates of electronic service orders in the Electronic Vehicle Management System (EVMS) or UMOJA are essential.

Additional duties include preparing cost estimates for expendables used in repairs, completing Damage Discrepancy Reports (DDR), performing vehicle recovery with specialist equipment, and routinely maintaining hand tools and garage equipment. The technician must be capable of improvising and providing onsite customer service independently, even when away from the base workshop and without heavy equipment. Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor as needed.

Required Qualifications
Candidates must have completed secondary or high school education along with a recognized technical or vocational certificate or diploma in automotive mechanics, vehicle maintenance, diesel mechanics, or a related field. A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in maintaining and repairing light and heavy 4x4 vehicles is required. Knowledge and experience in automotive electrical/electronic systems and automotive air conditioning repairs are desirable.

A valid driving license for both light and heavy-duty vehicles is mandatory. Applicants will undergo a practical automotive test to assess hands-on competency in fault detection, system servicing, shop safety, and repair verification across core vehicle systems.

Preferred Qualifications and Additional Information
Appropriate technical and vocational qualifications in vehicle repair and maintenance are highly desirable. Proficiency in Urdu is required, while working knowledge of English is considered an asset.
