This position involves conducting comprehensive mammal inventories focusing on threatened, endemic, and keystone species across diverse ecosystems. The role requires executing mammal surveys using various methods such as camera trapping, sign surveys, pellet and dung counts, and line transects. The candidate will be responsible for analyzing data to estimate abundance, density, occupancy, and population size, including detailed camera-trap data analysis. Additionally, assessing population structure by examining age classes, sex ratios, recruitment rates, and herd sizes will be a key part of the job, contributing valuable inputs to project deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct mammal inventories emphasizing threatened, endemic, and keystone species.
- Perform mammal surveys using camera trapping, indirect sign identification, pellet/dung counts, and line transects.
- Analyze camera-trap data to estimate abundance, density, occupancy, and overall population size.
- Assess population structure, including age classes, sex ratios, recruitment, and herd size.
- Interpret indirect signs to estimate population parameters accurately.
- Work across various ecosystems including subtropical, temperate, sub-alpine, and alpine regions.
- Provide detailed inputs and reports based on survey findings to support project deliverables.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years of relevant professional or research experience in wildlife or mammal studies.
- Strong expertise in identification and taxonomy of wild mammals.
- Proven experience in conducting diversity, distribution, and population surveys.
- Proficiency in camera trapping techniques and camera-trap data analysis.
- Ability to interpret indirect signs and estimate population parameters such as abundance, density, and occupancy.
- Knowledge of population structure and dynamics, including sex ratio, age distribution, recruitment, and herd size.
- Experience working in subtropical, temperate, sub-alpine, and alpine ecosystems.
- At least an MPhil/MS degree in Wildlife Sciences, Zoology, Ecology, Mammalogy, or a closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
- A PhD or specialized research experience in mammalogy or related disciplines is highly desirable.
- Candidates with advanced research skills and a strong publication record in mammal ecology will be preferred.
This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to critical wildlife research and conservation efforts, working in diverse and challenging ecosystems. The position demands a candidate with a solid scientific background, practical field experience, and analytical skills to support effective mammal conservation strategies.
