Baidarie Sialkot

Baidarie is a non-government and non-profit organization established in 1993 by the rural women of UC Roras District Sialkot who were keen to work for the empowerment and development of the women of their area. It carries out its operations without having religious, lingual, political and social considerations. It is registered with the Social Welfare Department, Punjab under Voluntary Social Welfare Agencies (Registration & Control) Ordinance 1961 (XLVI of 1961) vide Registration certificate No. DDSW-GRW (Regd) / 2000-790 of 2000 dated August 3, 2000. Its area of operation covers whole of the District Sialkot.

Baidarie works to motivate the rural communities-particularly women belonging to the poor segments of society, to take an active part in the process of mainstream social development. The organization strives hard to develop women into active, productive and dynamic citizens of the society.

Head office of Baidarie is in village Roras which is located on the west bank of Upper Chenab canal-at a distance of eighteen kilometres towards south-west of the Sialkot city –world known Pakistani hub of sports goods, surgical and leather garments industry. Village Roras is named after a Hindu Raja “Rod” who ruled over this area several hundreds years ago.

Setting up of Baidarie was the direct outcome of the efforts of a batch of sensitized young girls living in villages of Union Council Roras District Sialkot who had developed a strong feeling that women living in rural areas are the poorest among the poor and the most vulnerable among communities. They are trapped in a web of dependency and subordination due to their low social, economic and political status and are seen as the repository of the family honor- although not regarded honorable themselves.

They developed the firm conviction that unless and until women get themselves organized and make efforts for their empowerment their fate can never change for the better so they decided to organize for
Motivating women to shun away their lethargy and inactivity.
Putting an end to all forms of injustices, discriminations and inequalities practised against women.
Making them a regular and active part of the process of mainstream social development by empowering them socially, economically and politically.

The organization founded by the women in 1993 was named “Baidarie”-an Urdu word meaning Awakening”. They hold it as a symbol of the process of their awakening for the achievement of their basic rights.
