Scala Engineer

As a Scala Engineer, you will work remotely on an hourly paid basis, focusing on reviewing AI-generated Scala code, system designs, and technical explanations. Your role involves producing high-quality reference implementations and providing step-by-step reasoning for complex engineering challenges. You will evaluate solutions for correctness, clarity, safety, performance, and adherence to given prompts. Additionally, you will identify issues related to concurrency, distributed systems behavior, JVM performance, functional correctness, and resource management. Fact-checking technical information and writing clear, accurate explanations and model solutions are key aspects of this role. You will also assess and compare multiple AI-generated responses based on their correctness and reasoning quality.

This position is fully remote and offered on a contractor basis through SME Careers, a subsidiary of SuperAnnotate. Key Responsibilities

- Develop AI Training Content: Create detailed prompts covering Scala and JVM topics, and write high-quality reference answers to support AI learning and development.
- Optimize AI Performance: Evaluate and rank AI-generated responses to enhance correctness, safety, performance, and contextual relevance.
- Ensure Model Integrity: Test AI outputs for inaccuracies, unsafe patterns, and biases, validating their reliability across real-world scenarios.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 4 years of professional experience building production systems using Scala, including backend services, data platforms, or distributed systems.
- Expert-level proficiency with Scala 2.13+ and/or Scala 3, demonstrating a strong understanding of the type system, implicits/givens, collections, and functional programming patterns.
- Solid JVM fundamentals, including knowledge of the memory model, garbage collection, profiling, performance tuning, and troubleshooting production issues.
- Extensive experience with concurrency and effect systems such as cats-effect or ZIO, and/or actor-based systems like Akka or Pekko.
- Proven ability to design and operate services in distributed environments, including microservices, messaging/streaming systems, retries, idempotency, backpressure, and consistency tradeoffs.
- Strong testing skills using ScalaTest, MUnit, and property-based testing frameworks like ScalaCheck, along with familiarity with CI/CD workflows.
- Comfortable with build tools and dependency management, including sbt and Maven/Gradle interoperability, as well as version control best practices.
- Minimum C1 English proficiency in both written and spoken communication, with the ability to write clear technical explanations and follow detailed English-language guidelines.
- Highly detail-oriented and systematic, with a methodical approach to evaluating reasoning quality and identifying subtle issues in Scala and JVM systems.
